Suffering from a longstanding problem that is proving difficult to resolve? Tried various therapies but the results are short-lived?

It is not unusual to think that a problem that has been nagging on and off for years is something that you just have to live with. In our experience we find that in order to cope with pain, patients often adopt avoidance strategies, such as not performing certain aggravating movements or physical activities, for fear of making their symptoms worse. Whilst this may be a way of coping and may even relieve the pain for a period it can be very frustrating when the symptoms return, frequently worse or you find you become even more physically restricted.

Why symptoms come and go like this can be due to any number of factors and the longer you have had the problem, the more challenging the solution!  However, there is nearly always a way of improving the level of physical activity and reducing or even relieving the symptoms. Through a comprehensive assessment we can identify the underlying cause of your symptoms and more importantly the reason why it has occurred in the first place. The very nature of a long-term problem means that often the way in which we move, the strength of our muscles or the muscular control of our movement, can be making our symptoms worse. As physiotherapists we are trained not only to identify if the joints are stiff but also to re-educate the pattern of movement and strengthen the muscles to reduce the risk of a problem returning. In doing so we are then able to help restore all previously avoided movements and return the patient to physical activities that may have once seemed completely unattainable.
