podiatry

x-ray of the lower legs and feetPodiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower leg. Assessment and treatment of foot pain requires a detailed understanding of how the lower limb is working as a whole. During walking, running or recreational sports activities, the foot has to cope with forces that can produce changes in supporting structures including the bones, joints and soft tissues of the limb.

Over time these changes can prove to be damaging and ultimately cause pain and discomfort and in some cases deformity. At the same time conditions such as arthritis can prevent normal function and reduce mobility. The effects of these changes can often be reversed with treatment that is personalised to each individual.

What do Podiatrists and Podiatric Surgeons Treat?

Podiatrists are highly skilled professionals who have been trained to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate disorders and diseases of the foot and lower limb, which can sometimes involve non-invasive surgical procedures on nails and soft-tissue.

Podiatric surgeons on the other hand will have undergone further extensive post-graduate training to enable them to undertake more invasive corrective surgery on bones, joints and soft-tissue.  Podiatric surgeons offer comprehensive treatment options (including surgical care where necessary) for a wide variety of musculoskeletal (MSK) problems, including:

  • achilles tendon pain
  • nerve and joint inflammation
  • arthritis in the foot and ankle
  • sports injuries, especially in the ankle
  • fractures in the foot and ankle
  • foot problems in people with diabetes
  • birth deformities and other foot problems
  • heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
  • high-arched and flat feet
  • bunions
  • problems with the small toes
  • leg, knee and low back pain caused by foot instability or poor foot posture

Treatments

Treatment options can broadly be categorised as follows:-

  • biomechanical assessment
  • prescription of custom-made and pre-fabricated orthotics
  • cortico-steroid injection therapy for inflammation
  • home exercise plans for muscle weakness, joint stability and balance
  • prescribed medicines and other pharmaceutical products
  • surgical procedures

Please note - we provide a specialist consultant podiatric service focusing on musculoskeletal (MSK) problems as outlined above.  For general foot healthcare (such as regular toe-cutting, hard skin removal or verrucae treatment), you should ideally contact a foot health professional or chiropodist. Many of these will come and treat you in your own home. We can put you in contact with a local practitioner if you are struggling to find a qualified professional.
